The mission of the Department of Biological Sciences is to expose students to the scientific process and to promote the ability to think critically and to communicate science effectively. Position Summary:

The Assistant Director is responsible for the coordination of laboratory activities within the Department of Biological Sciences. This includes implementing laboratory course and research needs, ordering supplies, managing inventory, and managing the department budget.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work under the supervision of appropriate administrators, department chairperson and/or designated faculty members.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision over professional laboratory staff.

This position is twelve (12) month, exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

Medical or Religious Exemptions

Essential Duties:

Coordinate with department chairperson, course instructors, and other laboratory staff to plan and implement laboratory course needs, including teaching and research laboratory preparation, throughout the academic year and summer sessions.2. Coordinate with department chairperson in the supervision of other Department of Biological Sciences laboratory support personnel, including holding regular staff meetings and coordinating preparation schedule and assignments.3. Participate in and/or supervise the acquisition, maintenance, inventory and safe storage of laboratory supplies, specimens, and equipment for use in course and research laboratories.4. Prepare laboratory equipment for teaching and research activities and ensure proper maintenance of equipment, including coordinating with vendors and other outside agencies.5. Manage chemical inventory. Monitor storage of controlled and hazardous materials (excluding radioactive materials) and adhere to proper safeguards under the direction of the University’s Safety Officer.6. Manage departmental budget, including acquisition and maintenance of Purchase Orders, signatory responsibilities (including General Purpose Procard), and monetary transfers. Communicate with vendors to obtain quotes and ensure competitive pricing.7. Place and submit orders for research and course laboratories as needed. Make occasional short trips off campus for local purchases.8. Utilizing an equity lens, learn and train other department personnel on laboratory procedures and use of equipment, as needed.9. Perform other appropriate duties as directed by the department chairperson.

 

Required Qualifications:

Ability to use computers in budgetary applications, laboratory management, and correspondence, including a proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.

Salary Range: $75,000 – $85,000
